Description

1800 BD-1 Eagle, MS61
Late Die State, Likely Struck in 1801

1800 $10 BD-1, High R.3, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/e. The sole variety 1800 BD-1 eagle ranks among the scarce-yet-available early ten dollar gold pieces based on John Dannreuther's estimate of 200 to 300 pieces known. A limited 5,999-piece mintage suggests greater scarcity, but Bass-Dannreuther points out there was a remarriage of the 1800 BD-1 dies in 1801 after the rare 1801 BD-1 obverse die failed early. The reverse die was carried over from 1799 and employed on both the 1800 and 1801 BD-1 varieties, with the late reverse die state confirming this coin and others like it were struck in 1801. This sharp MS61 example is partially prooflike at the borders and displays sparkling orange-gold color. A uniformly sharp strike exists despite the late die state, with a heavy die crack above ERTY of LIBERTY and several weak die cracks at the lower reverse legends. Dentil die clashing above STAT of STATES is diminished by die lapping but still visible to help confirm the die state. NGC Census: 13 in 61 (1 in 61+), 22 finer (12/25).
