Description

1843 Coronet Ten Dollar, MS60
A Major Rarity in Mint State
Sole CAC Example at This Grade or Finer

1843 $10 MS60 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6859, Normal Date. The reported 75,462-piece mintage is far larger than the Philadelphia Mint's production of ten dollar gold pieces during the surrounding years, yet the scarcity of 1843 eagles in high grades is well known. It is the scarcest of most early date No Motto eagles regardless of mint and only a half dozen or so examples exist in Mint State. Overall, the 1843 Liberty eagle is conditionally scarce in AU grades, and Mint State examples are major rarities. This MS60 P-mint example displays lightly abraded brassy-gold color with extensive areas of reflectivity within the fields on both sides. Light abrasions and small marks dot the original surfaces but do not diminish the coin's natural eye appeal. Star 9 is weak yet all other devices are well-struck and sharp. The population totals show one MS60 coin at PCGS and one finer, while NGC lists four examples grading MS60 and one finer. Importantly, this is the only CAC-endorsed example at either service. PCGS Population: 1 in 60, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 60, 0 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N7079)
