Description

1863 Three Cent Silver, PR67 Cameo
Registry Grade Example

1863 3CS PR67 Cameo PCGS. According to the 2022 Guide Book, a small mintage of 460 proof three cent silver pieces was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1863, despite the economic stress and chaos from the Civil War. Widespread hoarding of precious-metal coinage resulted in the suspension of specie payments late in 1861. Since the government would not accept paper currency at par after that, the price of proof sets rose considerably. Collector demand for proofs dropped accordingly, resulting in low mintages all around.

The present coin is a spectacular Superb Gem, with sharply detailed, frosty design elements and deeply mirrored fields, all under vivid shades of cobalt-blue and sea-green toning. Despite the attractive patina, field/device contrast remains strong and eye appeal is terrific. Population: 5 in 67 (3 in 67+) Cameo, 0 finer (10/21).(Registry values: N4719)
