1920-S Indian Ten Dollar, MS63
Among the Top Series Keys
A High-End Rarity

1920-S $10 MS63 NGC. There are many condition rarities in the Indian eagle series, but only a few issues are absolute rarities. Among these are the Rolled Rim 1907 coins and the melt-rarity 1933. But two San Francisco issues also stand as top-tier keys: the 1930-S and 1920-S. Of these, the 1920-S is rarer.

This issue boasts a mintage of only 126,500 pieces, which is slightly higher than that of the 1930-S. However, the 1920-S circulated to a greater degree. A significant portion of the 1920-S survivorship grades in circulated condition or is impaired, and most Mint State pieces are only MS62 or lower. The majority of the pieces we have handled in the last decade have been circulated or impaired, some severely so. The two Mint State pieces we have handled recently were an MS61 PCGS coin in our January 2025 FUN Signature, which realized $93,000, and an MS64+ PCGS August 2024 ANA Signature, which realized $312,000. The current MS63 NGC piece falls a point shy of that MS64+ coin, but it is nearly identical to it in terms of strike. The obverse border stars are sharp, as is the opposing reverse denomination. Accordingly, some weakness shows on the date and the upper reverse border legend. Slight central softness appears as well, suggesting this coin and the MS64+ PCGS piece we handled in 2024 were struck perhaps on the same press in close proximity. Perhaps many of the high-end Mint State coins come from this delivery.

Strike aside, this 1920-S is luminous with rich peach-orange luster. Only light marks limit the grade, and they are easily ignored in light of the overall excellent eye appeal. Few 1920-S coins grade this fine. NGC Census: 7 in 63, 9 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N7079)
