1908 Indian Eagle, PR66
Early Sandblast Proof
First Year With Motto

1908 $10 Motto, Matte Finish, JD-1, Low R.5, PR66 NGC. The U.S. Mint's matte proofing technique had already been used for years in England and France, and the U.S. Mint had experimented with similar finishes on late-19th-century medals. By 1908, Mint officials were prepared to implement the sandblast finish on gold coinage. These were the first proof tens that collectors could purchase directly featuring Saint-Gaudens design and Barber's No Periods modification. After a few test proofs in 1907, the Mint struck 116 proofs in 1908, experimenting with different surface styles including a pale orange-yellow matte; the far more prevalent dark matte finish in khaki-olive color; and a single satin or Roman Gold variant. Collectors responded strongly to the first broadly available proof of the type. Garrett and Guth note that the 1908 proofs remain the most accessible proofs in the Saint-Gaudens eagle series. Even so, high-grade survivors remain elusive. NGC records only 10 certifications grading PR66 and 11 finer examples (12/25).

This Premium Gem offers exceptional technical quality and eye appeal. Its fine-grained matte surfaces remain pristine, showing no meaningful grazes or contact, and its pale orange-brown coloration distinguishes it from the darker 1908 sandblast proofs more commonly encountered. This coin's razor-sharp detail, smooth fields, and attractive color combine to produce a standout example of an historically important first-year collectible Proof issue -- one that displays an ideal marriage of surface texture and color complementing the beautiful Saint-Gaudens design.
