Description

Elegantly Toned MS64 1848 Seated Dollar

1848 $1 MS64 PCGS. CAC. Among 1840s Seated dollars, the 1848 was a "down year" for production at just 15,000 business strikes. In addition, the changing relative values of silver and gold -- and the unchanging ratios laid out in law -- caused many silver coins, dollars especially, to be melted down soon after minting. By contrast, this near-Gem not only survived, it has done so with grace. Peach and blue-green patina drapes strong luster, satiny on the obverse and semireflective on the reverse. Aside from the expected small marks, peripheral striking softness is the only real demerit.(Registry values: N4719)
