Description

1856-C Liberty Half Eagle, AU58
Challenging Branch Mint Issue

1856-C $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. Scarce at the AU58 level and rare in Uncirculated grades, the 1856-C ranks among the more challenging Charlotte half eagles. Mint luster remains at the margins of this orange-gold example. Tiny marks are are frequent (visible under a loupe), although this coin is less abraded than most of the issue. The curls around Liberty's face are a bit weak from an incomplete strike, combined with a trace of wear to justify the assigned grade. Full obverse denticles exist, indicating an early strike. Census: 35 in 58 (2 in 58+), 14 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P4)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UW, PCGS# 8267, Greysheet# 9018)
