Description

1850-D Gold Dollar, MS61
Rare Dahlonega Mint Issue

1850-D G$1 MS61 PCGS. Winter 2-C. The rare 1850-D Liberty Head gold dollar had a mintage of only 8,382 coins. In Mint State grades, the issue becomes very rare. The 1850-D characteristically has a weak strike, with the portrait and some stars having a flat appearance, while the reverse design elements tend to have better detail. Doug Winter described the issue: "The 1850-D is one of the rarest Type One Dahlonega gold dollars. It is also among the most underrated and undervalued gold dollars struck at the Dahlonega Mint."

This rare Mint State specimen has the typical flatness of the hair detail on the portrait, particularly above the ear, and stars 1 through 5 are flat. The reverse wreath has good definition, but some reverse lettering displays strike weakness. Luster is present with a grainy texture and is more radiant on the reverse. Small contact marks are present on both sides, consistent with the grade. Orange-gold surfaces are attractive and give the coin nice appeal. Overall, this is a lovely 1850-D gold dollar.
