Exceedingly Rare Pattern Denier

Henri III gold Pattern Denier 1586-D MS61 PCGS, Lyon mint, Ciani-1462. 1.75gm. D Inversé. HENR · III · D : G · F · ET · P · R 1586 ? Two lis in trilobe, three clovers in spandrels / SIT · NOM · DNI · BENED · A · M · (double voided quadrilobe stops) Cross formed by four florettes within quadrilobe, annulet in center, four clovers in spandrels. Extremely rare issue under Henri III, both the silver and gold types known to us only as patterns, which practically never surface at market. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only representative to appear in recent memory, and in Mint State no less. The flan retains a palpable sheen, offering a hint of saffron tone during in-hand inspection. The striking is somewhat inconsistent but retains legibility, including a fully intact date. An incredible find for the elite collector of French hammered gold.
