Description

1829 Quarter Eagle, AU55
First Year Small Size, BD-1

1829 $2 1/2 BD-1, High R.4, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, with no clashing, no lapping, and no cracks on either side. This is the first year of the Reduced Diameter Capped Head quarter eagle, featuring new beaded dentils, which replaced the cigar-shaped dentils of earlier years. All mintages of this old tenor design type were low and required only one die marriage each year. Chief Engraver William Kneass engraved the modifications to the design. Kneass was appointed as Engraver to the Mint in January of 1824 after the death of Robert Scot in November of 1823. William Kneass had been primarily a copperplate line engraver prior to his Mint appointment, having started his engraving career in 1796 as an apprentice to James Thackara in Philadelphia. Thackara had been previously trained in engraving by Robert Scot.

From a small mintage of 3,403 coins in 1829, an estimated 70 to 90 specimens are known in all grades, making the issue very scarce to rare for the date. This lovely example has warm honey-gold toning. There are some marks on the cap and in the fields of both sides which are consistent with the grade, but the overall appeal is very nice. The strike is full with all design elements displaying clear definition, including Miss Liberty and the eagle. Glowing satiny luster is found in protected areas of the design. A rare opportunity to acquire an 1829 Capped Head quarter eagle.
