Description

1799/8 B-1, BB-142 Dollar, MS61
Guide Book Overdate, 13 Stars Reverse

1799/8 $1 13 Stars Reverse, B-1, BB-142, R.4, MS61 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. The dies are in an advanced state with heavy cracking on the reverse and a delamination around the I in AMERICA. Three die pairs exist for 1799/8 dollars. One features a 15 Stars Reverse, with the two extra stars hidden below cloud 8. Two have 13 stars. BB-142 has the leaf pointing to the center of the I in AMERICA, whereas BB-143 shows the leaf under the left side of the I. Both are about equally scarce, though the latter may just barely have the edge on this variant. Either way, locating any example in Uncirculated condition is a major coup. Probably no more than 10 or so Mint State representatives survive, and the overdate feature makes them all the more sought-after.

Bold design detail appears on the stars, legends, wing tips, and other peripheral features. Definition is marginally softer at the centers, including Liberty's middle curls and the eagle's neck/breast. Golden patina blankets satiny, unworn surfaces that show minor ticks and hairlines. Myriad die chips are as made. Population (combined BB-142 and BB-143): 1 in 61, 7 finer (10/21).
