Description

1893 Quarter Eagle, PR66 Deep Cameo
Stellar Eye Appeal, Few Are Finer

1893 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.5, PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Although available in lesser grades, proof 1893 quarter eagles become scarce at the Premium Gem grade and increasingly rare with Deep Cameo contrast. CAC endorsement adds to the scarcity of highly graded examples such as this coin. The proof 1893 quarter eagle had a mintage of 106 pieces, slightly less than production totals would amount to in the following years. No more than 50 to 75 examples survive, and John Dannreuther concurs, suggesting only 50 to 60 proofs are known in all grades and formats. Little confusion exists when encountering prooflike circulation strikes since the date or proofs is much lower, nipping at the dentils. This piece offers excellent eye appeal with a combination of stark field-device contrast and truly impressive surface preservation. The frosty motifs are fully brought up and there are no blemishes in the fields. Distinctive antique-gold color provides added eye appeal. PCGS Population: 4 in 66 (1 in 66+) Deep Cameo, 6 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 6 finer (7/25).
