Description
1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar, MS62+
Rare O-101, Finest Known Example
1807 50C Draped Bust MS62+ NGC. O-101, R.5. Ex: "Col."
E.H.R. Green. The Draped Bust design was retired partway through
the year in 1807, but a substantial mintage of 301,076 pieces was
achieved before the design change took place. Eleven die varieties
are known for the date, including the R.7 1807 O-115 (4 known). The
1807 O-101 is next in line for rarity. The Newman coin appears to be the finest known specimen of the O-101 variety. The coin is well-detailed and brightly lustrous, with mottled shades of sea-green, silver-gray, and amber toning on both sides. Striking weakness is limited to the eagle's head. A few minor contact marks can be detected on close inspection, none worthy of individual mention. For the advanced collector of early half dollar varieties, this lot represents an important opportunity.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
