Description
1866-S No Motto Five, XF45
Elusive Issue, Unknown in Mint State
1866-S $5 No Motto XF45 NGC. San Francisco produced the
1866-S Motto half eagle in a quantity more than four times as large
as the elusive No Motto five, 34,920 coins versus 9,000. Most of
the few minted circulated widely in the Old West of the era. This
Choice XF piece is far finer than the average circulated certified
example (this is redundant, as none are known in Mint State), which
is about VF30. The surfaces show a scattering of ticks and the
expected moderate wear, along with a somewhat irregular strike
(softness on a couple of letters of LIBERTY and the curls nearby)
and a couple of larger scrapes in the obverse.(Registry values: P8)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VY, PCGS# 8300, Greysheet# 9044)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
