Description

1922-S Double Eagle, MS65
Only a Dozen Pieces Certified Finer

1922-S $20 MS65 NGC. Ex: Ferrari Collection. As a whole, the 1922-S double eagle issue probably rates as "formerly rare" -- once nearly inaccessible in high grades, but now much more readily collectible thanks to a limited number of foreign repatriations. Those coins are mostly Choice Uncirculated or lesser-grade examples that have returned to U.S. ownership from abroad. Gem Mint State and better coins remain decisively rare. This MS65 example is brightly colorful with yellow and orange hues that alternate intensity at various angles. Frosty luster over each side clearly suggests careful long-term preservation. The Gem surfaces are minimally abraded save for a few minor, shallow marks in the left obverse field and a short, curving abrasion on the eagle's wing. NGC Census: 13 in 65, 3 finer (11/25).
