1915-S Panama-Pacific Fifty Dollar
Scarcer Round Variant, Unc Details

1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. The Panama-Pacific fifty dollar gold pieces command as much presence in the classic commemorative series as they do in-hand. These hefty gold pieces are the largest regular issue gold coins produced by the U.S. Mint, generally akin to the fifty dollar "slugs" produced by the San Francisco Assay Office during the California Gold Rush. Two variants of the Pan-Pac fifty were produced: an octagonal issue, with 645 pieces sold to the public, and a round one, with 483 pieces distributed. Congress only authorized 1,500 of each variant to be struck, but the high purchase cost of these pieces ($100 apiece) in 1915 stunted sales. The Round variant suffered most, as it was struck after the octagonal issue had already received some initial public spectacle and sales. Today, the round Pan-Pac fifty is the rarest regular-issue classic commemorative, and the coin most out of reach for the average collector.

The present piece, however, perhaps opens the door to acquisition for some collectors who might otherwise find the issue to be unattainable. In-hand, it displays as a sharp and lovely Mint State example, with smooth butter-gold luster. Close inspection reveals some hairlines, betraying a light cleaning, but they are minor. Indeed, for a Details-graded coin, this piece is exceptional. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. (Registry values: N7079)
