Description

1868 Shield Nickel, PR67 Cameo
Dramatic White on Black Contrast

1868 5C PR67 Cameo NGC. Fletcher IIa Reverse. The 1868 nickel has a lower proof mintage than later dates of the Shield series, particularly the 1883. Examples are rare at the lofty Superb Gem level, with or without a Cameo designation. Some coins designated as Cameo do not exhibit an inspiring degree of contrast, but the present piece does, since the motifs and legends are icy, and the fields are prominently reflective. The untoned surfaces appear void of contact, though we note a brief lintmark beneath the AT in STATES. Census: 5 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (7/19).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 276J, PCGS# 83822, Greysheet# 2899)
