Description
1856-D Half Eagle, MS60
Low-Mintage Dahlonega Issue
1856-D $5 MS60 PCGS. Variety 39-FF. As the San Francisco
Mint came up to speed, less Gold Rush bullion was shipped East for
coining, and production at the Dahlonega Mint dwindled. During
1856, the facility struck only about 23,000 coins, mostly half
eagles along with tiny mintages of gold dollars and quarter eagles.
The 1856-D five is rare in Uncirculated grades. The present
unblemished caramel-gold example has mildly prooflike fields. The
strike is sharp at the borders although the eagle's neck and
fletchings are lightly brought up, as are curls near Liberty's
ear.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UX, PCGS# 8268, Greysheet# 9019)
