Description

1872-S Seated Dollar, Original MS61
Low-Mintage, Few Survive in Mint State

1872-S $1 MS61 NGC. The 1872-S Seated dollar is the last S-mint in the series that is available to collectors (despite a reported production of 700 examples of the 1873-S, no examples are known to survive today). As such, the 1872-S issue offers a special cachet even beyond what the low mintage of 9,000 coins would indicate. Few examples of the 1872-S survive in Mint State, making the present MS61 NGC example a remarkably scarce coin. Most examples of the issue were either melted many years ago, or else they circulated extensively.

This example is softly lustrous and reflective -- even somewhat prooflike in the fields, particularly on the reverse -- beneath light patina in shades of gold, gray, and pale blue. A loupe reveals scattered signs of contact on each side, including a thin, straight scrape hidden in the eagle's left (facing) wing. Census: 2 in 61, 11 finer (9/15).(Registry values: N4719)
