Description

1856-S Double Eagle, MS64
CAC Approved, Ex:
S.S. Central America

1856-S $20 Variety-17D, Full Serif, S Tilted Right, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 6144. Along with a huge quantity of 1857-S twenties in high grades, the surviving population of 1856-S double eagles increased dramatically by recoveries from the famous shipwreck. More than 1,100 examples were found during the ship's first recovery operations, and another 304 examples emerged during the second recovery expedition in 2014. This example is encased in one of the original gold foil PCGS holders from Tommy Thompson's initial Columbus-America Discovery Group finds. A vibrant sunglow-gold example, this near-Gem 1856-S is fully struck and lustrous throughout the finely grained surfaces. Scattered minor abrasions preclude a full Gem Uncirculated grade, although the eye appeal alone exceeds expectations as confirmed by the accompanying CAC endorsement. This coin is struck from one of the few Variety-17D dies, with a full serif on U of UNITED and the S mintmark tilted right. Population (for the variety): 4 in 64, 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 0 finer (1/25).(Registry values: P4)
