Description

1795 Capped Bust Right Five, AU50
First Year of Gold Coinage
Small Eagle, BD-4, OGH

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-4, R.5, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. The BD-4 variety ranks among the more frequently seen 1795 Small Eagle die pairings, although it remains rare by any measure with fewer than 75 pieces known. This About Uncirculated example is seldom surpassed among surviving examples. The tip of the 5 in the date barely lies over the lower bust, and star 11 (of the interesting 15 Stars obverse) rests both on the ending Y in LIBERTY and star 12. A die crack from the edge to star 12 determines BD-4's spot in the emission sequence, since the obverse was previously used on BD-2 and BD-3. On the reverse, the small wreath ends are beneath the O in OF, and there are three berries, two outside, one inside, with the outside left berry low. BD-4 claims the only use of the Three Berries reverse die and the final use of the obverse die. Pleasing olive-gold surfaces display orange accents and traces of luster. A few tiny marks exist above the date and a few faint hairlines that exist, possibly from an old wipe, do not distract. This coin is housed in an a Generation 3.0 green label holder.
