Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot Faceplate
17.37 Ounces Actual Weight
Ex: S.S. Central America

Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot Faceplate. 17.37 Ounces (actual weight). CAGB-661. Kellogg & Humbert ingots comprised the largest single-assayer share of the various gold ingots recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. Some 372 ingots from the prolific Montgomery Street, San Francisco firm were recovered between the two salvage operations to the shipwreck site, with the majority -- 343 ingots -- being recovered during the first expedition. Of the 343 ingots initially recovered, 69 were melted down to create the widely popular Kellogg & Humbert commemorative proof "slugs." In each case, the stamped faceplate of the ingot was sheared off to preserve for history and collectors, with the balance of the gold being added to the commemorative coin pot.

This ingot, serial number 885, was one of those used for the commemorative restrikes, such that what is offered here is the preserved faceplate. The original ingot was a member of the Very Large Size weight class (100.01 to 300.00 ounces), and had an original stamped weight of 154.04 ounces. It was poured into Mold K&H-05 (64 mm x 149 mm). The faceplate stamps are laid out vertically: No. 885 / (company hallmark) / 154.04 OZ / 881 FINE / $2,805.36. The original ingot had the serial number repeated on the back side, in a different font, although the back side of the current face plate is merely sheared. The faceplate is approximately 4 mm thick. Smooth, bright surfaces are gleaming yellow-gold in color, lacking any of the reddish iron deposits seen on many other S.S. Central America ingots.
