Description

1800 BD-5 Half Eagle, MS61
The Usual Late Die State

1800 $5 BD-5, High R.3, MS61 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State e/c. The reverse has a radial die crack through the R in AMERICA and a crack through the lower part of the shield. This is the normally encountered die state for the BD-5 that is one of the two most plentiful varieties of the year. Attribution of 1800 half eagles is rather easy. The rarest variety is BD-1 that has a pointed 1 in the date and the final obverse star touching the drapery. BD-4 has a doubled M in AMERICA, and BD-5 has a reverse star touching the eagle's neck. The other varieties, BD-2 and BD-3, differ in the spacing of STATES OF, widely spaced on BD-2 and closely spaced on BD-3. Scattered contact marks appear on the reflective surfaces of this impressive piece that displays brilliant butter-yellow luster. Population for all 1800 half eagles: 20 in 61, 74 finer (7/25).
