1863 IN GOD WE TRUST Silver Dollar
Judd-345, PR62 Cameo, Struck in Silver
CAC Endorsed

1863 $1 Dollar, Judd-345, Pollock-417, Low R.7, PR62 Cameo NGC. CAC. Struck in silver with a Reeded Edge. About a dozen of these 1863-dated "transitional" silver dollars are known. Research indicates these proofs were struck at the Mint about 1869 and into the 1870s in silver, copper, and aluminum -- sold as part of a set including the other denominations. Similar restrikes were made dated 1864 and possibly 1865. Addition of the Motto was an important undertaking by the Mint, although it is unlikely such patterns would have been considered as early as 1863, nor did the transitional reverse die exist until several years later. Still, these patterns are highly collectible in both an intriguing and historical context. The mirrored fields provide bold contrast against the richly frosted raised devices for excellent Cameo effect. A few light marks are noted in the central-right obverse field, clearly accounted for in the assigned grade. CAC endorsement confirms the high quality of this flashy, well-made proof.
