Description

1873 Three Dollar in Copper
Judd-1335, PR63 Red and Brown
Only Four Confirmed

1873 $3 Three Dollar, Judd-1335, Pollock-1479, High R.7, PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. Struck from regular issue dies with a reeded edge, but in copper instead of gold. Judd-1335 was a member of a few off-metal proof sets that were complete by denomination, all pieces struck in copper. The Saul Teichman roster records only four specimens, one each to the Simpson and Bass collections, the present Select example, and another that first emerged in a 1976 ANA auction. The present piece is regarded as second finest, and it also shows the most remaining Red. Both sides display rich cherry hues. Well struck and unblemished with lightly granular surfaces, as made.

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 71623, Greysheet# 14230)
