Description

1838-D Half Eagle, HM-1, AU50
The Sole Dahlonega Mint Classic Five

1838-D $5 HM-1, R.3, AU50 PCGS. Congress authorized the first branch Mints on March 3, 1835. The three branch Mints, located at Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans, required construction of suitable buildings, the delivery of coinage equipment, and deposits of material. Workmen also needed to be employed, although at least one, probably more, relocated from Philadelphia. The preparations took time, and the first coins at each branch were produced in 1838. At Dahlonega, the Classic half eagle was the only coinage issue, and it is the only issue of the design minted in Georgia. Myriad handling marks are evident on the still lustrous honey-gold surfaces of this important piece.
