Description

1873-S Closed 3 Twenty, MS61
Conditionally Scarce Type Two

1873-S $20 Closed 3 MS61 PCGS. Small S. The Closed 3 variety of the 1873-S Liberty twenty is the more common of the two varieties from the issue, as more were struck before the San Francisco Mint received the replacement Open 3 dies later in the year. The issue is conditionally scarce in MS62 and extremely rare in MS63, as PCGS reports only seven such coins, with none finer (10/25). This example is well-struck for the issue, showing typical softness on the left obverse stars and on the hair over Liberty's ear and forehead curls. Otherwise, the devices are sharp and display frosty luster tinted with delicate lilac within the recesses. The green-gold fields are semireflective, more so on the reverse, and are highlighted with splashes of orange and amber for a colorful and pleasing cartwheel effect. Marks are as expected for an MS61, with none that detract.(Registry values: N2998)
