Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1769/67 PN-J MS61 NGC, Popayan mint, KM38.2, cf. Cal-2034 (overdate unlisted), Restrepo-70.13. The first year of issue, bearing an overdate that would indicate a die bearing the name of Ferdinand, later erased and re-punched to Charles III. Scarcely matched for technical quality, and a popular short-lived portrait type for Charles III and difficult to obtain in Mint State. This piece boasts bright sun-like surfaces with considerable residual luster at the peripheries, the strike fairly strong, with just some slight softening to the highpoints. A bold outlier for the type in terms of production quality and grade.
