Description

1868-S Five Dollar, MS61
Remarkable S-Mint Rarity

1868-S $5 MS61 NGC. The 1868-S half eagle saw an increase over the meager mintages of the previous San Francisco issues, to some 52,000 pieces; most survive today, however, in well-circulated condition. This Mint State example is a surprise, as NGC and PCGS show six grading events combined in the MS61 level with none finer. Many of the S-mint half eagles from the 1850s and 1860s are unknown -- or virtually unknown, depending on the issue -- in Uncirculated condition.

The present 1868-S, according to the NGC Census, is among the highest-graded of the issue at that service. As expected for the MS61 grade level, this piece shows a few bagmarks and ticks. However, the reddish-orange surfaces accented with lilac tinges show a surprisingly robust strike for an S-mint half eagle of this vintage, and strong eye appeal is furthered by a pleasing amount of mint luster on both sides. An important offering of this S-mint conditional rarity. Census: 4 in 61, 0 finer (7/14).(Registry values: P3)
