Description

Sensational Maximilian Peso From Guanajuato

Maximilian Peso 1866-Go MS66 NGC, Guanajuato mint, KM388, WR-64. The Guanajuato flavor of the Maximilian Peso is the rarest of the four possible issues of the famed type; which includes Mexico City, San Luis Potosi, and the aforementioned Guanajuato productions from 1866, and the 1867-Mo. This issue is elusive and prized in all grades, an XF45 just realized $5,280 a few months ago in one of our sales; but the present example is special. This extraordinary specimen is a full three grades finer than the nearest graded NGC representative and four grades finer than the finest offering at PCGS. A conditional outlier among Mexican rarities to such an extreme extent is hard to come by for such a heavily collected and oft-certified numismatic area. The surfaces are icy, frosted, impeccably preserved, and delightfully boisterous; a small flaw to the rim between 1 and 2 o'clock on the obverse is the only detractor worthy of note. We wouldn't be surprised if some of the most esteemed figures in Mexican numismatics staked their claim for such a remarkable coin.
