Description

1834 Proof Half Dollar, Mint State Details
Large Date, Small Letters
One of Two Known O-106 Proofs

1834 50C Large Date, Small Letters -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. Proof, Unc Details. O-106, R.8 as a Proof. The Autumn 2021 revision of the Stephen J. Herrman census lists 11 appearances of proof 1834 O-106 half dollars. But close inspection reveals that all 11 appearances are for the same well-pedigreed coin, identified by an abrasion near the E in UNITED. The present lot, then, is the second known O-106 proof. It is brilliant save for light golden-brown border toning and a tiny spot west of star 11. A thin diagonal mark is east of the left scroll end, and both sides display wispy hairlines. The strike is incomplete on the stars and west of the shield. The dentils and reverse peripheral legend show spreading toward the rim, as made.
