1907 Ten Dollar Wire Rim, MS61
Saint-Gaudens Indian Eagle Rarity

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS61 PCGS. The celebrated 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagle rarity was researched by numismatic author Roger Burdette, who determined that 542 examples were struck, 500 in late August to early September of 1907 and an additional 42 coins between September and the end of December. Later 70 of these pieces were melted at the Mint. From this mintage, Q. David Bowers estimates that 325 to 375 coins exist today, with most of these coins being "semi-lustrous, a hybrid between matte and mint frost." David Akers described the typical strike of the 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagle as "fairly well struck on the central devices (Indian and eagle), but very weakly struck at the borders."

The beautiful design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is well presented on this lovely example. The strike does display some weakness in the portrait and peripheral stars, with the reverse eagle being better struck with good feather detail. Light swirling die lines are present in the fields on both sides, which is typical of this issue. Some small marks are noted that are commensurate with the grade, but the eye appeal remains attractive with wheat gold and orange overtones enhancing the design.(Registry values: N4719)
