Description

Lovely 1820 N-15 Cent

1820 1C Small Date MS63 Red and Brown NGC and EAC. N-15, Late Die State, R.2. Among large cents of 1820, the N-13 variety is best known as a Randall Hoard cent. Newcomb-15 was also included, but to a lesser extent. This lovely cent is from a later die state with weakening border details. John Wright calls this the "High T" variety, as the T of LIBERTY is large and high, almost touching the upper coronet line. When faced with a Red or Red and Brown Mint State 1820 large cent, the cracked obverse of N-13 and the High T of N-15 will identify virtually every one. If such a cent doesn't have either of these characteristics, you are pondering a very rare coin. This cent has considerable orange mint color with light brown toning. A few inevitable spots are noted on each side and are similar to those found on nearly every surviving Randall Hoard cent.
