Description

French Colony gold 22 Livres ND (c. 1802) XF Details (Harshly Cleaned) PCGS, KM37, Fr-2, Gordon Variety B. "22 over Eagle" Countermark on West Indies Imitative Brazil José I 6400 Reis (Peça) 1775-R (cf. KM172.2 for original). 12.46gm. Counterstamped after the return of Martinique to France by Britain during the shorted lived peace of Amiens in the earlier years of the Napoleonic wars. Produced before the 1805 decree where this rarer "22 over Eagle" countermark was reserved for genuine Portuguese coins, and the "20 over Eagle" countermark was employed for imitative issue. Always a series that sees great fanfare.
