1778-79 Brass Rhode Island Ship Medal, AU55
Betts-562, VLUGTENDE Removed

1778-79 MEDAL Rhode Island Ship Medal, VLUGTENDE Removed, Brass, AU55 NGC. Betts-562, Breen-1139, Whitman-1730, R.3. The Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins rates these brass pieces with VLUGTENDE removed as URS-10 (250-499 known) that is equivalent to R.3 on the Sheldon scale. The other brass pieces with branches (wreath) below the ship are rated URS-9 (125 to 249 known). However, certified population data at NGC and PCGS suggest that they are about equal in rarity with 81 of the former and 83 of the latter graded at those services. A trace of high-point wear appears on the smooth chocolate-brown surfaces that exhibit light yellow splashes. Census (including those certified as copper): 3 in 55; 9 finer (10/19). Listed on page 52 of the 2020 Guide Book.
