1778-79 Brass Rhode Island Ship Medal, Unc Details
Betts-562, Breen-1139, Whitman-1730

1778-79 MEDAL Rhode Island Ship Medal, VLUGTENDE Removed, Brass -- Obverse Scratched -- NGC Details. Unc. Betts-562, Breen-1139, Whitman-1730, R.3. The initial production of these medals included the word VLUGTENDE on the obverse below Admiral Howe's warship, creating confusion at the time of issue, that word meaning "fleeing" and suggesting that Admiral Howe and his war party were fleeing from Rhode Island. A few were released without alteration, and those pieces are extremely rare today with only two known. The majority of those pieces had the word physically scraped off the obverse, leaving a blank depression below the ship that some might think is damage, but it is not. That is the way they were distributed at the time of production. The pale brownish-yellow surfaces exhibit a few minor scratches at the upper right obverse. Listed on page 52 of the 2020 Guide Book.
