1778-79 Brass Rhode Island Ship Medal, AU58
Betts-563, Mysterious European Production

1778-79 MEDAL Rhode Island Ship Medal, Branches Below Ship, Brass, AU58 NGC. Betts-563, Breen-1141, Whitman-1740, R.4. The Rhode Island Ship medals were produced in Europe, although there is some disagreement about the production location. Some suggest that they were British-produced propaganda pieces marking an English victory, with inscriptions intended for a Dutch audience. Christopher McDowell suggests that these are Dutch-produced jetons with a political theme designed to poke fun at the English who themselves were forced to retreat from Newport, Rhode Island, in 1779. The reference to Admiral Howe's flag and the year 1779, is, according to McDowell, a reference to Admiral Howe's resignation of his military commission immediately following the 1778 battle in disgust at the Admiralty's handling of the war in North America. King George III was himself gravely disappointed in Admiral Howe's failure to destroy the French fleet in the waters outside Rhode Island, at the same time the Dutch people were delighted in 1780 at the departure of such a fearsome foe as Admiral Howe from the English Navy, as the Dutch and English, while still allies, were clearly on a collision course for war. The pale yellow obverse has faint scratches visible with a glass, while the reverse is olive-brown with splashes of yellow. Census (including those certified as copper): 1 in 58; 11 finer (10/19). Listed on page 52 of the 2020 Guide Book.
