Description
1867 No Rays Nickel, PR67 Ultra Cameo
No Finer Examples at Either Service
1867 5C No Rays, JD-2, High R.2, PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. This
is the first of the No Rays proof issues in the Shield nickel
series, a design change that would last until the end in 1883. Of
an estimated 600+ proofs produced for the 1867 No Rays, this is one
of just three PR67 examples in Ultra Cameo or Deep Cameo at NGC and
PCGS (9/25). Indeed, there are no finer pieces at either grading
services, representing a major opportunity for serious Registry
collectors. A faint hint of olive-gold color over portions of the
gleaming mirrors heightens the Ultra Cameo contrast between the
fields and the fully struck, thickly frosted devices. Marvelously
preserved with only a few minuscule irregularities, such as a tiny
toning dot at the lower right obverse, to serve as future pedigree
markers. Census: 2 in 67 Ultra Cameo, 0 finer (9/25).Ex: J.B. Worthington Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, 5/2005), lot 60; Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2011), lot 5041; Dallas Signature (Heritage, 2/2021), lot 3659.
