Description

1874-CC Arrows Half, MS63
Colorfully Toned, Smooth Surfaces

1874-CC 50C Arrows, WB-101, Die Pair 3, R.4, MS63 NGC. This 1874-CC resides among the rarest of Carson City Seated half dollars, a date that nearly equals the 1870-CC and 1878-CC issues in scarcity. The mintage was small -- only 59,000 pieces were struck, from which only 16 to 19 pieces remain in Mint State according to Rusty Goe's most recent book, The Confident Carson City Coin Collector. Most Select or finer Uncirculated pieces are held in longtime collections, and seldom appear at auction. This sharply struck example is smooth and lustrous. Light, silver-gray patina covers both sides, with traces of slightly deeper gray toning surrounding the Liberty's frosted portrait and the eagle's bold motif. Only a few tiny marks exist and equally sparse isolated, hair-thin abrasions are seen under magnification. Housed in a Kenneth Bressett Red Book holder. Census: 3 in 63, 4 finer (10/25).
