Description

1848-C Two and a Half, MS62
Among the Finest Seen
Conditionally Rare and Underrated

1848-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Winter-1. The final 8 in the date is closer to the dentils than the bust, one of two varieties known for this low-mintage Charlotte issue. The surviving examples number between 200 and 250 pieces in all grades combined from the original 16,788-piece mintage. Mint State examples are rarely seen. PCGS and NGC combined show a mere seven pieces at the MS62 grade and none are certified any finer as of (10/25). While some 1848-C coins were struck with buckled dies, this example shows little central weakness and is better struck than most. Semireflective fields surround well-defined central motifs and the stars are sharp. On the reverse, even the eagle's legs, claws, and arrow fletchings show above-average definition. Natural green-gold color offers excellent eye appeal. NGC Census: 4 in 62, 0 finer (10/25).(Registry values: P2)
