Description

Alexander II gold "Baptism" Medal of 4 Ducats 1858 MS62 PCGS, GPH-1064 (there in 1 ½ ducats weight), 13.91gm. Dated 24 April 1858 on reverse. Obverse: КРЕЩСНIС (slight corruption of КРЕЩЕНІЕ [baptism]) BAΠTICIS (heavy corruption of the Greek ΒΑΠΤΙΚΗΣ [baptismal]), Christ standing slightly left in the River Jordan, being baptized by St. John to left; two angels to right; radiant dove (Holy Spirit) flying downward. Reverse: Nativity through a triptych of scenes: Jesus in manger, surrounded by shepherd, Joseph, an angel, Mary, and an ox and donkey; above to left, the three magi riding on camels; above to right, two shepherds advancing left; radiant Star of Bethlehem between. A popular design among Eastern Orthodox goldsmiths with some variation across time and space. The specimen here is among the larger examples to be located and comes to us without having been holed or otherwise mounted, as is usually the case. This is a spectacular opportunity for the Russian specialist or those looking to add a highly unusual gold type to an elite cabinet.
