Description

Historic 1861-D Half Eagle AU55

1861-D $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 39-FF. The 1861-D is one of the more elusive half eagles from the storied Northern Georgia facility and a historically significant branch mint issue produced on the eve of the Civil War. Prior to secession, records indicate an official mintage of a mere 1,597 pieces and it is generally acknowledged that a scant production followed under the auspices of the Confederacy. The fact that no distinction can be made between the Federal and CSA coins has only added to the allure of the 1861-D. This wonderfully preserved example is notable for bountiful luster and pleasing yellow-gold color. Both sides exhibit occasional deficiencies in strike that is characteristic of the issue and surface marks, while numerous, are consistently light and unobtrusive. A terrific find for the quality-conscious Dahlonega gold collector. Census: 8 in 55, 14 finer (11/06).(Registry values: P6)
