Description

Desirable and Scarce 1795 Small Eagle Five Dollar
BD-4, AU Sharpness

1795 $5 Small Eagle--Plugged, Whizzed--NCS. AU Details. Breen-6412, BD-4, R.5. Lovely butter-yellow patina drapes the surfaces of this well-defined representative. Although this piece has been whizzed, the surfaces show no significant marks or blemishes. The plug is surprisingly well-done and minimally detracts from the design elements. A die crack from the rim to star 12 indicates that this piece is obverse die state d, which is always paired with reverse die state a.
Dannreuther (2006) estimates that between 1,000 and 1,500 BD-4 specimens were struck out of a total mintage of 8,707 to 12,106 coins. Only 60 to 75 examples of this variety are believed to have survived. Speaking to the desirability of this issue, Garrett and Guth (2006) write: "The 1795, Small Eagle $5 gold piece is an extremely popular coin, being the first year of the type and denomination." Despite several flaws, the present piece is an impressive and fairly attractive representative of this important issue.(Registry values: P5)
