Description

1873 Trade Dollar, MS64
Transitional Dollar Issue

1873 T$1 MS64 PCGS. The transitional year 1873 marked the end of the Seated Liberty dollar and the beginning of the ill-fated Trade dollar that was intended to rival the Mexican crowns for trade in the Orient. Trade dollars were coined for six years, mostly at the San Francisco Mint, and then they were discontinued, although proofs were struck at Philadelphia through 1883, along with the 1884 and 1885 rarities. This Choice Mint State example is an attractive piece with natural gray-gold patina and wispy blue peripheral toning on the reverse. Population: 54 in 64 (5 in 64+), 18 finer (7/19).
Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2016), lot 5139, which realized $3,290.(Registry values: N2998)
