Description

1875-S Seated Half, MS65
'Spiked 5' Variety

1875-S 50C Very Small S, WB-101, Die Pair 17, R.3, MS65 PCGS. A tiny tine or die line from the left upright of the 5 earns the "Spiked 5" nickname for this variety, best viewed with a good lens and with the coin tilted down and right. The Very Small S mintmark shows slight repunching while a cigar-shaped die lump at the bottom of T in TRUST confirms the reverse. A mintage of more than 3.2 million pieces makes the 1875-S one of the more-available mintmarked issues for type. This lustrous example shows patches of deep toning at the borders with frosty silver centers and sharp devices. Population (all varieties): 59 in 65 (3 in 65+), 27 finer (6/16).
