Description

1836 Half Eagle, HM-7, MS64+
High-End Block 8

1836 $5 Block 8, HM-7, R.3, MS64+ PCGS. This is the second usage of both the obverse and reverse working dies used on HM-7, although there are no die cracks or distinguishing die wear markers that could indicate die state progression. The 6 in the date sits entirely beneath the curl, slightly right of center, while both the 1 and the 6 are noticeably larger than the 8 and 3 in the date. Two styles of 8 were used in 1836, Block and Script, this is the Block 8. There is a double forecurl that is diagnostic for the variety, the second curl appearing as a teardrop-shaped attachment to the main one. The reverse shows no berry and the eagle lacks a tongue.

Both sides of this high-end, near-Gem Classic Head five resonate with smooth, richly frosted luster across Choice green-gold surfaces. Honey-gold overtones are seen at the borders. While no 1836 half eagles are fully struck, this example is sharper than usual on the hair curls. Stars 5 and 6 show some minor weakness, as do the arrow fletchings below the shield. A few light field marks and abrasions are visible with magnification. In his excellent reference book United States Classic Gold Coins of 1834-1839, author Daryl Haynor states "Several of the known coins graded PCGS MS64 are HM-7, which is likely the finest known for these dies." By virtue of its PCGS Plus designation, this beautiful coin ranks within the Condition Census for HM-7.
