Description

1885-S Five Dollar, MS67
Among Finest Certified

1885-S $5 MS67 NGC. The 1885-S five dollar has a mintage of more than 1.2 million pieces, and approximately ten thousand examples have been certified as Mint State by leading grading services. Most of those coins rested in foreign bank vaults for decades, where they were indifferently stored and thus show countless small marks upon close inspection. In MS66, the 1885-S becomes a conditional rarity, and Superb Gems are limited to a single piece at PCGS and two others at NGC (10/25). Those numbers, 1 at PCGS and 2 at NGC, were identical more than twenty years ago when the present lot last appeared in a Heritage auction. The other NGC Superb Gem has not appeared at auction at the MS67 level, and we wonder if it might be a duplicate submission of the present coin. In any event, this is one of the very finest examples of the issue, and it displays splendid peach-gold surfaces with exemplary cartwheel luster.
