Description

1879-CC Silver Dollar, MS62
VAM-3A, 'Capped Die' Variant

1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3A, MS62 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. This piece is from the later die state of this popular Guide Book variety, with the G in GOD completely filled. This variety was created when a large mintmark was punched over a smaller one, with the former letters apparently partially effaced by minor chipping of the die around the mintmark. Doubling on the date numerals confirms the attribution. This example shows light golden toning and frosty luster. The eagle's breast and the hair above Liberty's ear are not fully defined, though the strike is otherwise pleasing. Scattered abrasions limit the grade.
