Iconic Near-Mint State "Battle of Borodino Memorial" Rouble

Nicholas I "Battle of Borodino Memorial" Rouble 1839 AU58 PCGS, St. Petersburg mint, KM-C170, Bitkin-893 (R1). Short rays variety. Struck to commemorate the unveiling of the Battle of Borodino monument. One of the most popular commemoratives from Nicholas I's reign, where all specimens approaching and surpassing Mint State designations are widely regarded and sought-after. While we've experienced the "Long Rays" variety with much more frequency, this occasion marks just the second example we've handled in 30 years. While precluded from a coveted Mint State assignment by wisps and gentle handling throughout, the piece retains an impressive frost and semi-Prooflike appearances to elevate its overall status.
