1866 Rays Nickel, MS66
Lustrous and Lightly Toned

1866 5C Rays MS66 NGC. The nickel denomination was introduced in 1866, during a time when silver coins were hoarded. The first-year 1866 had rays on the reverse, as did some 1867 nickels. The rays reduced die life and were removed mid-1867, ending the two-year subtype. A lightly toned and highly lustrous example with the usual die cracks and several heavy curved lathe lines (as made) near the cross. NGC Census: 34 in 66 (6 in 66+), 2 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N2998)
